A short ferry ride from Saltspring is a remarkable woman with a passion for (among many other things) clocks. On a trip to Europe she returned with a beautiful example of an early 18th.century long-case clock. Unfortunately all she had was the movement (no case). This became a two-part project: to research the probable appearance of the original case, and then to reproduce it.
As you can see from the photographs, the clock had its origin in a fairly decorative period - lots of veneering, using walnut burl over an oak foundation, together with decorative inlays. In the end I created all the bandings and inlays from local woods, including yew, holly, hawthorn and laburnum. So it's a reproduction with a West-Coast seasoning.
