Woodworking Classes

Since opening my studio on Saltspring in 1983, I have given many classes in various aspects of woodworking technique.

Popular classes have included hand-tool sharpening, Windsor Chair making, chair-seat caning and rushing with natural rush, furniture design and construction, making your own doors and windows, furniture repair and re-finishing, as well as more specialised classes dealing with specialized cabinet-making skills: e.g. drawer-dovetailing, mortice and tenon joinery, etc.

The emphasis in all classes is on acquiring basic joinery skills using hand-tools. This is the way I was taught, and the principle behind the method is that if you can perform any joinery operation with a hand tool, you will not find it difficult to do the same thing with a machine. Approaching it the other way round is a very different matter.
